Before you come in
What to bring for your permit.
Bring these four things and you will walk out with your permit on the same visit. No appointment required.
Your South African driving licence
Valid card-format licence. Learner's licences do not qualify.
ID or passport
Green barcoded ID book, smart ID card, or a valid passport.
One passport photo per permit
Gloss finish. We can take it in store for a small extra fee.
Completed application form
We hand it to you at the counter — no need to print anything.
Which permit
Two conventions. We’ll pick the right one.
Countries recognise one of two United Nations conventions — and a handful recognise both. Tell us where you’re headed and we’ll issue the permit that will actually be accepted at the rental desk.
Up to 3 years
1968 Vienna Convention
The longer-validity permit, recognised across most of Europe and much of Asia and South America.
Up to 1 year
1949 Geneva Convention
Still required by a number of countries, including popular destinations that never adopted the 1968 model.
Whichever convention applies, an IDP can never be valid for longer than your South African driving licence. If your licence expires in eight months, so does your permit.
